Three and a half years ago I was interviewing for a new nursing job with a rare disease program. During my interview, the director of the program said at least five times, “I just want to make sure you’re happy.”
— cue instant happy feelings —
Here’s the kicker — he really meant it. To make a long story short, I got the job, and to date, it has been the best job of my life.
What’s the lesson? It’s really all about the way you make people FEEL.
Think about your personal life. When you go to work do you feel heard, valued, appreciated and respected? You’re probably willing to put in more oomph and throw down better quality work if you do. In your relationship do you feel loved, trusted and connected? That probably translates into feelings of happiness and satisfaction, and a willingness to go out of your way to do nice things for your partner. Plus, you’re much less likely to look for love elsewhere if you have these feel-good vibes as the foundation of your relationship.
What about the way you make others feel?
This is just as important, because you get to choose the energy you’re putting out into the world. If it’s not already, this should be a central part of your business philosophy and framework. Everything you do should be grounded in and centered around the feelings you want your clients to have. It will leave a lasting impression, build trust around your brand and create happy customers. One more added perk: putting the focus on their feelings and their experience will give you direction and inspiration, help improve the quality of your work, and keep them coming back again and again. It’s never really about clinching the sale or building the email list — it’s about making people feel good.
If you’re new to this concept (and even if you’re not!) take a second to sit down and brainstorm. Ask yourself how you want your clients to feel when they work with you, visit your studio, sign up for your class, eat at your restaurant or shop in your store. It’s not just about the product or service you’re offering, it’s about the experience.
Choose a few power words to guide you. Finding your power words will help you hone in on and cultivate the feelings and vibe you’re trying to create, add to your success and help you produce focused, kickass content, products, classes and workshops.
My power words and phrases: Anything is possible. If they can do it so can I (and so can you). Passion. Empowerment. Creativity. Go-getting. Focus. Growth. Inspiration.
Tip: choose words that resonate with you personally. It’s a lot easier (and much more authentic) to convey feelings if they resonate with your soul and personal motivation.
